On a hot day, it is hard to imagine life without the soothing hum of an electric fan (or, for us Americans, an air-conditioning unit). We complain, we reach for an iced drink, we point a fan directly at our faces, and we carry on.

For the wealthy families of the Gilded Age, staying cool was possible. It simply looked rather different.

There were no cool bedrooms at the touch of a button. There was no home air conditioning as we know it. Instead, comfort depended on architecture, staff, ice, fashionable accessories and, when the heat became unbearable, the ability to leave town altogether.

Which, as it happens, is a very luxurious solution to almost any problem.

The Coolest Room in the House

A well-designed house could offer some relief from summer heat.

In Britain and America, thick walls, high ceilings, shutters, awnings and cross-ventilation helped keep interior rooms more comfortable. The grandest homes also had a choice of rooms: one might move to the north side of the house, retreat to a shaded drawing room or take tea on a covered veranda.

At Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert created a seaside retreat where the family could escape the pressures of London and Windsor. The location itself was part of the appeal: sea air, terraces, gardens and a private beach. English Heritage’s history of Osborne shows how carefully the estate was designed as a family home away from court life.

Fresh air was considered desirable, even when it made people slightly uncomfortable. Queen Victoria was known for insisting on open doors and windows at Osborne during the winter, to the irritation of her family. English Heritage records that the house also had a sophisticated heating system, a useful reminder that Victorian homes were often technologically more ambitious than we imagine.

In summer, though, the simplest strategy was to seek shade and catch any available breeze.

A Parasol Was Not Just for Looking Pretty

The parasol was one of the great summer accessories.

It protected a woman’s face and shoulders from the sun, helped preserve the pale complexion fashionable among elite women, and added a little extra theatre to an outfit. A lady could shelter beneath silk, lace or embroidered fabric while walking in the garden, sitting in an open carriage or attending a race meeting.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that carriage parasols became popular after Queen Victoria began using them while riding in open carriages in the 1840s. One surviving example is in the Met’s collection.

A Gilded Age lady’s handbag was a tiny thing, often so dainty that one wonders how it held anything at all.

It might be a beaded reticule dangling from the wrist, a velvet drawstring bag, a fine leather purse, or, by the turn of the twentieth century, a more recognisable handbag. It could be embroidered with flowers, trimmed with tassels or made from shimmering metal mesh. It was part of an outfit, certainly, but also a small travelling office, a sewing basket, a beauty case, and a social survival kit.

The details depended on the occasion and the woman. A lady attending the opera needed rather different provisions from one making afternoon calls. Yet some items turn up again and again.

So, if we could peer into the handbag of a fashionable woman in 1895, what might we find?

First, a Small Bag with a Long History

Before handbags became a regular part of fashionable dress, women had pockets.

These were not sewn into dresses as we might expect today. From the seventeenth century until the end of the nineteenth century, many women wore detachable tie-on pockets beneath their skirts. They were practical, generous in size and carried through slits in the petticoat. The Victoria and Albert Museum explains that they remained in use even as bags and purses became more fashionable.

On the afternoon of the 10th of March, 1894, crowds gathered outside the Church of All Saints in Kensington to catch a glimpse of a bride. The weather, the papers noted approvingly, was perfect. Inside, the church was full of the sort of names that made an Edwardian hostess’s pulse quicken: Princess Christian, Queen Victoria’s own daughter, and her daughter Princess Victoria beside her; the Countess of Arran, the Countess of Cairns, the Earl and Countess of Cadogan, the Earl and Countess of Craven. The wedding gifts were, in the language of the day, numerous, costly and magnificent—a diamond bracelet from one Indian prince, a pearl brooch from another, and from the bride’s father a diamond tiara, a diamond bracelet, a silver tea and coffee service, and a cheque for a sum too large to print.

The bride was Virginia Bonynge, a Californian. And not one of those glittering guests, I suspect, knew the truth about the man whose blood she carried.

I’ve been wanting to write about Virginia for a while, and there was really only one person to call. Rick Hutto has spent a lifetime tracing the American women who sailed east and married into the British and European aristocracy—the dollar princesses, the gilded heiresses, the girls whose fortunes shored up a hundred crumbling estates. His new book—Gilded Finale: The Bradley Martin Ball and the End of the Gilded Age—is out in January and available to pre-order now, and he has a memory for this world that I have come to rely on completely. So I asked him to walk me through Virginia. What follows is our conversation, tidied only lightly, because Rick tells a story the way the best historians do—sideways, generously, and always with one more thread to pull.

A Girl From the Wrong Coast

When we picture the gilded heiress, we picture a particular geography. The eastern seaboard. Newport, New York, the Hudson Valley. Names we already half-know— Vanderbilt, Jerome, Leiter. Virginia came from none of that.

“We think of the eastern seaboard, preferably northeast,” Rick told me, “with these great families whose names we all recognise. There were a few out west. And we just sort of tend to leave those out of our stories.”

Virginia was born in 1866, which places her right at the front of the wave—earlier than Consuelo Vanderbilt, a near-contemporary of the very first crossings. But where a Vanderbilt daughter had marble and lineage behind her, Virginia had something else entirely: a fortune with no pedigree, and a childhood with a shadow over it.

Her stepfather was Charles William Bonynge, an Irish-born speculator who made a great deal of money in the California mining booms and gave Virginia both his surname and his wealth. Her birth father was a man named William Daniel, and it is here that the story darkens. By some accounts he was hanged. By the account Rick gave me, drawn from his own research, it was stranger and sadder than that.

“Her father thought he’d committed murder,” Rick said. “He tried, and he thought he was successful. He went into prison. And then even the man he’d shot said, after a few years, let him out. So the guy comes out—and basically kills himself.”

Whatever the precise truth, the shape of it is unmistakable: a father lost to violence, prison and self-destruction, and a little girl of three left on the right side of a divorce, carried off by a mother who married money and never looked back. The great unanswered question, Rick says—the one that hangs over everything that followed— is how much Virginia herself ever knew.

“At one point she said she didn’t know any of that,” he told me. “But who knows if she did or not.”

The city empties, and the dinner invitations become scarce….and everyone seems to be either “just about to leave” or mysteriously already in the countryside. They’re somewhere with a tennis court, a rose garden, and a rather good cook.

For the wealthy families of the late Victorian and Edwardian world, however, summer holidays were on an entirely different scale.

This wasn’t just a quick week in Cornwall with a paperback and a hopeful weather forecast. No, summer was a grand migration. Families moved from London to country estates, sailed to the Isle of Wight, travelled north to Scotland, and, in America, established themselves in Newport’s extraordinary “cottages” for months at a time.

The Gilded Age elite may not have had Instagram stories of their beach clubs and picnic hampers, but they certainly understood the importance of being seen in the right place, with the right people, in the right outfit.

And one thing is clear: they did not leave society behind. They took it with them.

The Annual Escape from Town

The London Season was a carefully choreographed whirl of presentations at court, balls, dinners, concerts, the theatre, Ascot, Henley, and Cowes. The summer calendar was closely connected to the royal court and its great sporting occasions, each with its own social rules and wardrobe requirements, as the Victoria and Albert Museum notes.

By late summer, the rhythm changed. Those fortunate enough to have a country house left town for estates where the days could be arranged around riding, tennis, fishing, garden parties and lengthy meals with house guests.

The country house was a stage to set.

It’s no big secret that the Gilded Age heiresses loved gowns.

From the stately mansions of Newport to Fifth Avenue salons, women of the upper echelons of society wore their wealth on their sleeves, literally. But they weren’t simply flaunting (though arguably that was part of the appeal). No, being seen in the latest couture from The City of Lights was as essential to one’s standing as good etiquette.

Whether in lavish parties thrown by New York’s infamous Four Hundred, debutante balls or weekends in the countryside, the obsession with Parisian designs was palpable, propelling those with means to journey across the Atlantic, both physically and metaphorically, to claim a piece of this exclusive world for themselves, one custom gown at a time.

But how did American heiresses’ love of French fashion influence trends, culture and the fortunes of the maisons lining the cobbled street of Paris?

Paris: The unofficial capital of Gilded Age fashion

By the late 19th century, Paris was unequivocally the world authority on all things style.

Wealthy American women regularly hitched across the Atlantic to commission gowns from the hottest fashion houses du jour, including Charles Frederick Worth, Maison Felix, Jacques Doucet and House of Paquin.

The attraction was twofold: quality and prestige. European designers produced luxuries America couldn’t yet match, from the live mannequin shows pioneered by Worth to the intricate tailoring synonymous with Paquin. Even the custom gowns themselves cost significantly more for American clients than their Parisian contemporaries, an exploitation driven in part by the assumption that the Americans were far wealthier, and one that only added to their alluring exclusivity.

Many heiresses became more than casual customers, evolving into major patrons as fashion became both luxury and investment. Fashion houses depended heavily on their American clientele, particularly after the Franco-Prussian War disrupted the European market in the 1870s. By 1900, American buyers accounted for a significant share of profits for labels across Paris, significantly contributing to their growth and prominence.

Patrons flocked to Rue de la Paix, often squeezing in two or three fittings during their seasonal visits to Paris. Each bespoke gown pencilled for ‘grand soir,’ ‘theatre’ or ‘country tea’ signalled how versatile, and visible, the wardrobe of any self-respecting heiress needed to be.

This fashion symbiosis reshaped the industry. America’s elite demanded fabrics, details, and drama, and Paris responded, launching trends and silhouette changes faster than ever to feed the growing demand.

Fifth Avenue’s fashion scene grows

But it wasn’t just about Paris, you know.

Many elite families shuttled between mansions on Fifth Avenue and salons in rue de la Paix, seeing Europe as the perfect place to educate their children and rub elbows with the continent’s well-to-do. The famous heiress Alva Vanderbilt and her siblings received early tutelage in manners and couture in Paris during the late 1860s, while her mother busied herself shipping French furniture back to New York, establishing European decor and dress as twin markers of refinement.

Meanwhile, couturier Catherine Donovan, an Irish-born Paris-educated designer, opened her New York salon on Madison Avenue around 1900. She became a favourite of Mrs Astor’s so-called Four Hundred, stocking wardrobes with imported gowns and adapting Parisian styles to suit the evolving tastes of the American elite.

Yet Parisian flair was also mimicked closer to home. On New York’s Ladies’ Mile, department stores such as B. Altman & Co. and Lord & Taylor began to offer imported fabrics and even adaptations of French couture for women who lacked the time or social access to travel.

Couture as cultural currency

These couture creations were more than just simple, if outrageously expensive, outfits; they were declarations of status, power, and wealth.

Fresh-faced debutantes and veteran socialites alike commissioned morning dresses, tea gowns and evening robes that announced to society that they belonged, all without saying a word. Fashion was a strategic tool, and dressing exquisitely could elevate a family’s social standing, bridge the gap between country and transatlantic society, and even facilitate marriage alliances.

At Newport’s yacht club, opera boxes, or Ladies’ Mile promenades, women in Worth or Doucet dresses were recognised wherever they stepped, whether across the ocean or down Fifth Avenue.

Names like the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Fish became synonymous with taste, and Paris couture became the expected standard. Even for those left behind, magazines and European expositions showcased Worth’s creations for the aspirational classes.

Gowns that made society

But in a sea of glittering gowns, some pieces left their mark more than others.

Consuelo Vanderbilt’s 1895 wedding to the Duke of Marlborough was as much a fashion spectacle as a dynastic manoeuvre. Her European-made ivory lace gown (then a rare and costly material), floral decor and imported seasonal planting were front-page news, with Vogue dedicating almost the entirety of their November 15, 1895, issue to it. But the union, though glamorous, was loveless, a reminder that a fashionable heiress does not a happy heiress make.

A few years later, another gown stole the hearts of High Society.

At NYC’s famed Bradley Martin Ball of 1897, a Worth gown dubbed the ‘Infanta dress’ became so legendary that The Museum of the City of New York still displays it today. The infamous dress was worn by Margaret Katherine Brice, who commissioned it by telegraph at the last minute. The dress was reportedly completed and shipped within 24 hours, never losing one thread of the quality synonymous with the juggernaut fashion house.

A legacy of design and display

Much of this fashion heritage remains alive today in museums and ceremonies.

From the recent ‘Worth, Inventing Haute Couture’ exhibition at the Petit Palais in Paris, to the 19th-century-inspired red carpet looks at the Met Gala of 2022, and smash hit TV show, The Gilded Age, remnants of this celebrated era of fashion can still be felt today, over a hundred years later.

The women of the Gilded Age used clothing to curate their identities, shape social narratives, and define how wealth and femininity were perceived. Every silk panel, every velvet train, told the world something about who they were, or who they wanted the world to believe they were.

More than a century later, we’re still captivated by the elegance, theatre, and ambition sewn into those Parisian gowns. From Fifth Avenue to the front row, the legacy of these heiresses lives on, not just in taffeta and lace, but in the enduring link between fashion, power, and performance.

When an American heiress marries into an English family that comes with a house the size of a small village, you might picture her days spent gliding through cold state rooms, admiring the ancestors on the walls. Alberta Sturges had other ideas entirely.

Across a bundle of her letters home to her mother in America, written from Hinchingbrooke in the last spring of the Great War and the years just after, one quiet project runs beneath everything else. It is the turning of an enormous, echoing, inherited pile into somewhere warm. Warm in the plainest sense, which as we shall see was no small battle, and warm in every other way besides.

A Thought in the Garden

The impulse announced itself early. In May of 1918, with the war still grinding on, Alberta sat out in the garden and had a thought that rather shames the rest of us.

“George and I are thinking of lending Hinchingbrooke to the Red Cross as a hospital... yesterday sitting in the garden it seemed wicked to have so much loveliness and not share it.”

There it is, the whole of her character in a single line. The beauty of the place did not make Alberta possessive. It made her generous. Where another chatelaine might have pulled the great house closer around herself, she looked at all that loveliness and felt almost guilty keeping it to one family.

When peace came, and came suddenly, she wrote to her aunt Tantine with her mind already made up.

“Peace coming so suddenly has altered our life again... our job is at Hinchingbrooke very steadily for a few years.”

And then the line I keep returning to: “If I can just get my strength back I will make as bonny a home maker as there is.” A countess, in a house of centuries and servants, quietly naming her ambition as homemaking.

Hot Water Like the Ritz

But a home has to be livable, and Hinchingbrooke, like most great houses, was perishing cold and a good century behind the times. Alberta threw herself at the problem with the glee of a woman who dearly loved a project. First came the plumbing, reported to her mother in the triumphant tones of a general after a hard-won field.

“Our bath system is now perfect and it has boiling water like the Ritz... bath water in 30 seconds.”

Then the great campaign for central heating, which she waged with all the strategic patience it deserved.

“I think we must embark this winter on the central heating to make this home comfy. George longs to settle in to it and not go to London or away every winter, and as it is, it is too cold.”

She even took on the ancestors, bringing in the specialist who cleaned for the National Portrait Gallery to lift a hundred years of grime from the family portraits. They “haven’t been touched for 100 years,” she marvelled, and now looked “so much more alive and brilliant than formerly.” Naturally, she stood and watched him work. “I have been learning,” she wrote, and of course she was. Alberta was always learning.

But warming the house was only ever half of it. What she did next opened its doors to the whole town, and left me with the funniest, most disarming line in the entire bundle.

At a Gilded Age ball, nothing was accidental. Not the order of arrival or the placement of the chairs or the angle of a glance across the room…

No, they were all carefully managed rituals. But none carried quite as much social weight as the introduction itself.

To be introduced was to be made visible. To be incorrectly introduced was, in some circles, almost worse than not attending at all. (And it wouldn’t even have been your fault!)

Elite society in London, New York, and Newport was tightly structured around recognition and reputation, which meant that introductions worked as a kind of social passport system:

They determined who could speak to whom, who could dance with whom, and, ultimately, who could move comfortably within the room.

That’s a lot of weight for a few sentences to manage!

The Ball as a Controlled Social Machine

Gilded Age balls were not spontaneous gatherings. They were carefully organised events governed by etiquette, architecture, and hierarchy. If that sounds stuffy, it’s because it was.

The great houses of New York and Newport, such as those built by families like the Vanderbilts, were designed with circulation in mind. Guests moved through defined spaces: arrival halls, receiving rooms, and ballrooms all arranged to control flow and visibility.

Basically, it as crowd control for the very rich.

Social historians of the period note that these spaces were not simply decorative. They looked nice, of course, but they were actually functional systems for managing interaction at scale. The ball itself was a machine for arranging relationships, and not merely for celebrating them.

The etiquette guides preserved in collections show just how prescriptive these environments could be, detailing everything from arrival timing to proper conduct during introductions. Nothing was left to chance, darling.

Who Could Introduce Whom

At the centre of the system was a simple but rigid rule: only someone of appropriate standing could introduce others.

And introductions were never casual little gestures. They were endorsements. To introduce two people was to vouch for their social legitimacy within the same sphere. You were, in effect, staking your own good name on it.

Typically:

• A host or hostess controlled introductions within their own home

• Individuals of higher social rank could introduce those below them

• Mutual acquaintances could facilitate introductions, but only with implied consent

So, in practice, social access rested in the hands of a very small number of gatekeepers. A successful introduction could open doors to entire networks. A refused one could quietly close them…and you might never learn which door had shut, or who had shut it.

The Choreography of the Moment

The act of introduction itself was highly formalised. Positively balletic, really.

When introducing two people, nineteenth-century etiquette manuals advised a very specific sequence: the name of the person of lower social standing was presented first, followed by the higher-ranking individual. It was the hierarchy itself, and it was spoken aloud for all to hear.

A typical exchange might unfold like this:

The host approaches two guests, names are clearly stated (often with the barest elaboration), both parties acknowledge each other with a bow or a curtsey, and then a brief remark is exchanged before the whole thing dissolves into conversation or movement.

Blink and you’d miss it. But that was rather the point. Nothing here was meant to linger…its whole purpose was to move you along to the next encounter.

Keep it moving, keep it moving.

The Importance of Being Properly “Presented”

In elite society, there was a world of difference between being introduced informally and being formally presented. One was a handshake. The other was practically a coronation.

In the Gilded Age, food was never just food. It was social signalling…a performance of refinement, and a piece of choreography as tightly rehearsed as any ballroom quadrille. What sat on the table mattered as much as who sat around it, and quite possibly more than anything said over it. You could learn everything about a family from the first course.

Across New York, Newport, London, and Paris, elite dining evolved in step with the age itself: industrialisation, global trade, and the sudden professionalisation of domestic service. Ingredients that once travelled no further than the nearest market now arrived from across oceans, landing on the plates of households wealthy enough to want them. Trained chefs carried the strict grammar of French haute cuisine into Anglo-American dining rooms and refused to let anyone forget the rules.

Mix all of that together and you get a food culture built on abundance, yes, but governed by precision and staged for spectacle.

Oysters: Leveller Turned Luxury Staple

Oysters were one of the most widely consumed foods of the nineteenth century. In coastal cities like New York, they were cheap, plentiful, and everywhere, shovelled out by the dozen from street stalls and smoky taverns. But they weren’t born fancy. Before the makeover, an oyster was a common snack, slurped down by dockworkers and dowagers alike.

By the mid to late nineteenth century, though, the oyster climbed the social ladder. It never quite left the working-class plate, but at the top it acquired scale and staging. At formal dinners it opened the evening as it bedded on crushed ice. And, on the grandest nights, it was cradled in wide silver dishes that announced both plenty and welcome before a single fork was lifted.

That was the trick of the oyster, you see. The very same creature could mean everyday supper in one room and gracious hospitality in the next. And while nothing about the oyster actually changed, the theatre around it did.

New York’s oyster houses became social stages in their own right. Some were loud, crowded, and gloriously unbuttoned. Others were hushed and reserved for a wealthier clientele, who preferred their bivalves with a little more ceremony. Over time the oyster settled comfortably into both worlds at once, which makes it one of the clearest cases of culinary overlap the era produced.

Terrapin, Game and the Taste of Exclusivity

Alongside the democratic oyster sat a more explicitly exclusive set of foods. Terrapin, a freshwater turtle, became the darling of New York high society in the late nineteenth century, stewed in rich sauces and served in the city’s most prestigious hotels and private clubs.

Believe me: If you were eating terrapin, everyone knew exactly where you stood.

Game held the same power. Venison, pheasant, grouse, and canvasback duck carried weight that oysters never could, because you couldn’t buy your way into them at a street stall. These were the spoils of land ownership, of seasonal hunting rights, and of long, unhurried days on private estates and shooting grounds.

And so, game on the table became a message. It whispered of countryside estates, sporting privilege, and the tangled networks of inherited wealth that a self-made millionaire could not simply purchase overnight.

The menus from elite hotels—Delmonico’s chief among them—lay out carefully ordered processions of fish, game, and roast meats, each course arriving in its appointed place. That order was very intentional; it was French haute cuisine and formal etiquette dictating the rhythm of the evening.

Aspic and the Art of Edible Spectacle

One of the most unmistakable flourishes of Gilded Age dining was aspic.

Aspic is a savoury jelly made from clarified meat stock, used to suspend meat, fish, eggs, and vegetables inside glittering decorative moulds. In elite kitchens it became a badge of technical mastery and a small miracle of engineering.

(Though, by today’s standards, it reminds be a bit of the unappetising Jell-O creations in 1970s kitchens.)

There is a particular kind of discomfort that arrives when every hour has already been assigned a purpose. In the Gilded Age, this was not unusual. For the elite, life was not simply busy or quiet, but rhythmically structured around seasons of visibility and withdrawal. Entire households moved to a shared calendar that dictated when life was meant to be seen, and when it was expected to fade into the background.

We often think of this world as endlessly social. Balls, dinners, Newport weekends, London Seasons. Yet what sits between these peaks is just as revealing: long stretches when nothing was supposed to happen at all. These pauses were not accidental. They were part of the system.

A Life Built Around Seasons

Elite society in the nineteenth century moved to a carefully timed calendar that governed both geography and behaviour.

In London, “the Season” concentrated political, marital and social activity into a defined period when Parliament was sitting, and aristocratic families returned to the capital. Townhouses filled, invitations multiplied, and visibility became almost a form of public duty. In New York, the rhythm was less formally codified but no less powerful, shifting between winter city life and the summer concentration of Newport, where a dense social world briefly intensified before dispersing again.

This was not a casual movement. It was an agreed choreography, reinforced by etiquette, invitation networks and the press. Newspapers reported arrivals and departures with the same seriousness as events themselves, tracking who was “in town” as a marker of relevance. To be absent at the wrong time could mean simply disappearing from the social record for months.

What Happened When the Season Ended

When the social calendar paused, houses did not simply become quieter. They changed function entirely.

City residences were shut or partially closed. Staff numbers were reduced, often dramatically. Drawing rooms that had been the centre of nightly entertaining became spaces of maintenance rather than display. Even correspondence shifted tone, moving from constant coordination to slower, more deliberate exchanges.

Three weeks before she became a countess-in-waiting, Alberta Sturges sat down at her desk at 12 Bruton Street, Berkeley Square, and wrote a hurried note to a nun in Calcutta.

Consider what else she might have been doing on the 3rd of July, 1905. London was at the very height of the Season. The trousseau had to be ordered, the gifts acknowledged, the breakfast arranged, the bridesmaids fitted, the hundred small negotiations of a fashionable wedding carried through. Alberta was American money marrying an English earldom, the most legible transaction the Edwardian drawing room knew how to read, and the social machinery around such a match was relentless. There were a thousand people she was expected to write to that week.

Instead she found a few minutes, apologised for having only a few minutes, and gave them to Margot.

I haven’t time for more than just a word, but in my new joy, I have been thinking much and often of you.

And then, on the envelope, in her own hand, an address that tells you almost everything about who Alberta Sturges really was:

The Friend in Calcutta

To understand why this letter matters, you have to understand who was going to open it on the other side of the world.

Margaret Elizabeth Noble was born in County Tyrone in 1867, the daughter of an Irish clergyman. She became a schoolteacher in London, clever and restless and hungry for something the conventional life could not give her, and in the autumn of 1895 she went to hear a visiting Hindu monk speak in a West End drawing room. The monk was Swami Vivekananda. The encounter rearranged her entire existence.

Three years later she sailed for India. Vivekananda initiated her into the vow of the celibate religious life and gave her a new name, Nivedita, which means “the dedicated one.” She settled in Calcutta, put on the plain dress of a Hindu widow, and in November 1898 opened a school for girls in the Bagbazar quarter of the city, teaching children whom almost no one else thought worth teaching. By 1905 she was one of the most remarkable Englishwomen alive: an educator, a writer, increasingly a voice in the early stirrings of Indian nationalism. She had given up comfort, country and name for a cause on the far side of the earth.

This was Alberta’s “Margot darling.” Not a debutante. Not a cousin from the Hudson Valley. A barefoot teacher in a Calcutta lane.

They had met through the same circle that shaped everything tender and serious in Alberta’s young life. Both women had sat at the feet of Vivekananda. Both were bound to the same luminous, eccentric, deeply devoted woman they each called by the same pet name, Tantine, the American Josephine MacLeod, who scattered letters across continents and held this whole spiritual family together by sheer force of love. “Tantine will have written you,” Alberta notes, “how happy I am, now soon to be married.” The news travelled along a private wire of seekers and mystics that ran from a London square to a Calcutta school, and Alberta wanted to send her own word down it.

Last month, in More Than Heiresses: The Women Who Transformed Their Own Fortunes, we briefly met one extraordinary woman whose story stood apart from even the most determined Gilded Age social climbers. She wasn’t born into wealth, she didn’t marry a millionaire, and she certainly didn’t inherit a fortune. Instead, she built one herself.

Her name was Madam C. J. Walker, and for more than a century, she has been celebrated as America’s first female self-made millionaire.

But was she?

Like many stories from the Gilded Age, the truth turns out to be rather more interesting than the headline.

From the Cotton Fields to the Wash Tub

Madam C. J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove on 23 December 1867 in Delta, Louisiana. She arrived in a world still reeling from the aftermath of the American Civil War. Her parents, Owen and Minerva Breedlove, had both been enslaved before emancipation, making Sarah the first child in her family to be born free.

Her childhood was marked by hardship. Orphaned by the age of seven, she moved to Mississippi with her older sister and later married at just fourteen, a decision she later suggested was partly to escape abuse at home. Widowed before she turned twenty, she supported herself and her young daughter, Lelia, by working as a laundress in St. Louis.

For years, she earned little more than a dollar a day.

When we think of the Gilded Age, we tend to picture fortunes being inherited rather than earned.

The era’s most famous women are often remembered as heiresses – daughters of railroad magnates, mining tycoons, and industrialists who carried vast fortunes into marriage. Their stories are filled with glittering ballrooms, grand estates, and transatlantic titles.

Yet not every wealthy woman of the Gilded Age was simply the beneficiary of someone else’s success.

Some inherited money and multiplied it. Some managed enormous investments. Others built businesses from the ground up. A remarkable few amassed fortunes entirely through their own determination, business acumen, and willingness to challenge expectations in a world that often assumed serious financial matters belonged exclusively to men.

In an age when women in Britain and America still faced significant legal and social restrictions, these women proved that wealth creation was not solely a male pursuit.

The Businesswoman Who Terrified Wall Street

No discussion of self-made wealth in the Gilded Age can begin anywhere other than with Hetty Green.

Born in Massachusetts in 1834 to a prosperous whaling family, Green inherited wealth but became famous for how she used it. While many women of her social standing relied on male relatives or advisers to manage investments, Green took complete control of her finances.

She studied markets, read financial reports, and made investment decisions herself. During periods of economic uncertainty, she frequently purchased assets that others considered risky, only to profit handsomely when markets recovered.

By the early twentieth century, she was widely regarded as one of the wealthiest women in America. Newspapers dubbed her the “Witch of Wall Street”, often portraying her as eccentric because she devoted so much attention to business. Yet behind the sensational headlines was an exceptionally capable investor who understood finance as well as many of her male contemporaries.

Green’s story reveals an uncomfortable truth for many observers of the time: women were perfectly capable of succeeding in finance when given the opportunity.

The Haircare Entrepreneur Who Built an Empire

While many Gilded Age fortunes originated in industry and railroads, some emerged from entirely different sources.

One of the most extraordinary examples was Madam C. J. Walker.

Born Sarah Breedlove in Louisiana in 1867, Walker’s early life bore little resemblance to the privileged backgrounds of many society women. She was born to formerly enslaved parents and faced considerable hardship during her youth.

After developing haircare products aimed at African American women, she built a thriving business that expanded across the United States and beyond.

Walker employed thousands of sales agents and established training programmes that provided economic opportunities for other women. By the time of her death in 1919, she had accumulated substantial wealth and was recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first self-made female millionaire in America.

A Robe That Held a Dynasty

The first thing that truly stops you is the Royal Christening Robe. Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841, made by her Scottish dressmaker Janet Sutherland from Spitalfields silk and Honiton lace, the very same materials used for Victoria’s own wedding dress the year before. Every royal baby wore this robe for the following 130 years. Princess Elizabeth was christened in it on the 29th of May, 1926, in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace.

One robe. A hundred and thirty years. I stood in front of it for quite a long time and felt rather overcome.

Two Little Girls in Matching Dresses

In the early years, it was the Queen Mother who dressed her daughters, and she had absolutely impeccable taste. Baby dresses, Liberty printed frocks, bloomers, fancy dress costumes, many from the London firm Smith and Co Limited. She became a devoted client of the Parisian couturier Jean Lanvin in the mid-1930s and acquired the most wonderful things for Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, those matching dresses the sisters wore being utterly iconic now, all lamé fabrics and shaped raised sleeves.

But the thing I cannot stop thinking about is the doll. Lanvin sent a pair of dolls to the Queen Mother for the princesses, porcelain faced, felt bodied, each with a complete miniature wardrobe. The doll’s dress was a tiny replica of the princesses' own, blush silk with lamé detail and a padded gold lamé belt. It is the sweetest, most poignant thing, because it reminds you that beneath all the ceremony and the history and the weight of it all, there were just two little girls playing dress-up. And one of them would become Queen.

Young women were expected to make advantageous marriages, uphold family reputations, and master the rituals of society. Public behaviour was scrutinised, and private lives were often discussed in newspapers and drawing rooms alike.
